1. Avoid letting children or pets into the kitchen
Children should be supervised at all times, especially when they are doing anything that involves the use of the stove or a knife. Make sure that the kitchen is a toy free zone and that your pet is not lounging on the kitchen floor as the chances of someone tripping over them of something dropping on them are high.
2. Know how to handle fire
Remember that oxygen fuels fire. So, the idea is to cut off the oxygen supply to the fire source. Never use water. Instead, use baking soda or a fire extinguisher in the cause of kitchen fires.
3. Always have a fire extinguisher around
Fire extinguishers are a must in every house hold. It should be placed close to the kitchen as kitchens are the most fire prone areas of the house. Keep its cylinder full and also learn how to use it while installing it.
4. Smoke detectors
One should for sure have smoke detectors in the house. Houses without them are twice more likely to have a fire related incident than the houses which are equipped with smoke detectors. Test the detectors at least 3-4 times a year to make sure that they are working.
5. Appropriate clothing
Synthetic clothing tends to catch fire too quickly, therefore wear cotton clothes in while working in the kitchen, particularly while working around a fire. Don’t full sleeved clothes or clothes with hangings on them as they tend to get stuck here and there and can cause unnecessary accidents.
6. Be cautious of the steam
We tend to be careful around a fire but at times fail to act with the same care around steam. Be careful to not stand too close to a vessel when it is about to release its steam and also be careful while removing the lid of any hot dish.
7. Clean up
Clean up almost immediately after cooking. It’s only natural that some spillage is caused in the kitchen from time to time but in order to prevent any accidents, make sure to not leave anything spilled on the floor.
Where there is food, there will be germs and bacteria. Make sure to keep your kitchen clean and sanitized at all times. You don’t want your family to fall sick because of the lack of kitchen hygiene.
